Border crossings

+ → Trips & odometer → International border: the odometer, and the country you’re entering; Domestic border, in the same group: the state, province or region inside one. Free.

The place you choose counts Never the phone’s spot: right at a border the maps often can’t tell which side you’re on.

Logging one

Each opens on its own kind, and the form can switch it. International border: between two countries, with a border check. Domestic border: a line inside one country, a state’s, province’s, region’s or UK nation’s, with no border check (a weigh station for trucks isn’t one); choose the one you’re entering.

Choose the country you’re crossing into (its state or province too, if you like) and type the odometer: it counts as an odometer reading for your mileage, at every level.

Use where I am fills the place in when the maps can tell which side you’re on (in the UK, the nation they put you in, else the United Kingdom: choose the nation if you like). Right at a border they often can’t, so the place you choose is what counts, never the phone’s spot.

History shows it as “Into Ontario”, its full ticket too:

  • A border: a BORDER tag and its icon.
  • A state or province line: its own tag (STATE LINE, PROVINCE) and a road sign.
  • Its flag: the one an entry there shows, a state’s, province’s, prefecture’s or region’s in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany and the Czech Republic; the UK’s for its nations; elsewhere the country’s (Jersey’s and Gibraltar’s their own).

An odometer reading’s form has This is a border crossing: a reading taken at a border becomes one, and a crossing turned off is a plain reading again, its place, photos and notes kept.

On drives and recordings

Automatic tracking (however drives start) and a trip recorded with GPS log the crossings on the way by themselves, once the drive is saved: no odometer, how far into the drive instead.

They find borders, state and province lines, all by one rule: a crossing counts once the route is surely on the other side (a few miles past a border, about 150 feet past a state line), so a road along a line crosses nothing.

A recorded trip’s crossings move to another car and are deleted with it, as a tracked drive’s do.

With the automatic region

The automatic region (Plus) takes the place you chose as where you are: the flags, the average prices (where your currency has them), the Passbook’s map and the units on Current move there. When an entry with a place is newer than the crossing (one logged late), you stay where that entry was, and the form says so.

With following off, a new crossing’s form offers Follow me across borders, on unless you turn it off: saving turns following on (editing a crossing never does). The Dash then welcomes you there when the crossing is your newest entry; one logged late turns following on quietly (Welcomes on the Dash).
